The LES is supposed to keep the contents of the stomach in their place. In response to certain dietary or other lifestyle infractions, however, this valve can malfunction by relaxing and allowing the highly acidic contents of the stomach to back up into the esophagus, causing considerable pain to its sensitive linings.
