Heartburn Conditions |
If frequent, such backups (clinically known as refluxes) can inflame the esophagus, leading to a condition called esophagitis, in which event just the act of swallowing becomes painful. If untreated, this condition can lead to ulcers within the esophagus, bleeding, and eventually a buildup of scar tissue that can make swallowing not just uncomfortable, but, in extreme cases, difficult to accomplish at all.
