We used to think that these headaches were due simply to muscle tension or emotional stress, but today the distinction between tension-type headaches and migraines is less clear-cut and more controversial, says Dr. Sheftell. American researchers believe the two types have a similar mechanism as they develop in the body. European researchers believe they are separate disorders with separate mechanisms. In any case, your body's chemistry, not just tense muscles, is at least partly to blame for tension-type headaches.
