Restrict dietary fat and cholesterol. Although some experts still feel the link may be only secondary-in other words, dietary fat promotes gallstones only by promoting obesity-Dr. Pitt and an increasing number of other researchers feel the connection is more direct. "Studies using laboratory animals have shown a direct connection, and epidemiological studies also are now beginning to show a link." (Epidemiological studies look at populations and their activities.) One epidemiological study found that a group of people with gallstones were including significantly more fat and cholesterol in their diets than a control group that was gallstone-free.
