Nutrition Scientists created the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Think of these guidelines as the seven keys to healthful eating. But-and this is a big but-these seven keys won't work if you don't put them to use.

You can get the keys to work-or get them to work better-if you also use the master key: remember to enjoy your food! It's simple and will help you stick with all the other guidelines over them the long term.

In survey after survey, people say that nutrition is important when making food choices. But by far and away, taste is given as the number one reason for choosing a particular food. After all, enjoying food is one of life's great pleasures. Putting foods you like on the "off-limits" list in the name of good health is unnecessary, and may even make you give up on healthful eating altogether. Fortunately, you don't have to sacrifice flavor for good nutrition.
