Chronic Otitis Media |
General Considerations
This is present when irreversible damage has occurred to middle ear structures.
Clinical Findings
- Tympanosclerosis caused by chronic inflammation and calcification may be present.
- Retraction pockets may be present.
- Adhesive otitis, cholesteatoma and fixation and damage to the ossicles.
- Severe hearing loss.
Treatment
Surgery will be necessary for adhesive otitis media, cholesteatoma, or ossicular derangement. Improvement of hearing and prevention of further damageb to middle ear is the objective.
