LDL-Heart Disease culprit. "Low-density lipoprotein tend to deposit cholesterol in the arteries," says Basil Rifkind, M.D., senior scientific advisor of the Vascular Research Program at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

The higher your LDL level, the higher your heart-disease risk. That is way LDL is often called the "bad" cholesterol.
