Triglycerides are a type of blood fat associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and hardening of the arteries. In a small Canadian study of people with type 2 diabetes, participants lowered their triglyceride level when they took omega-3 fatty-acid supplements. However, according to the ADA, fish oil supplements can raise blood glucose and are not recommended because they are not standardized, and some don't even contain omega-3 fatty acids.
"To keep the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acid," advises Hill, "incorporate more cold water fish in your diet, such as salmon, tuna, bass, mackerel, sardines, herring, bluefish, and halibut."
