STARS

STARS
The sun is one of the most familiar things in our lives, yet very few of us realize how vital it is to our existence. Its rays are the source of all our light and heat. From the sun come all the life and energy on the earth. Without it, there would be no food, no flowers or trees, no animal life. When we use coal and oil to heat our homes and run our automobiles and factories, we are really using the sun's energy.

Although it is difficult to believe, we know that our sun is a star, just like the others in the sky. It appears so much larger simply because it is closer to us than any other star. It is 93,000,000 miles from the earth. Although this is a great distance, light travels so quickly that the sun's rays reach the earth in a little more than eight minutes.
