DRY Pleurisy

DRY Pleurisy
Clinical Features

In this condition involvement of parietal pleura in disease process produce pain which is sharp and aggravated by deep breathing due to friction between parietal and visceral pleura.

It disappears when fluid accumulates in the pleural cavity and prevents rubbing of the two layers. The condition is generally due to underlying lung disease like pneumonia, pulmonary infarction and tuberculosis.

Trauma to the chest wall, lesions of chest wall and diaphragm e.g. (subphrenic adscess) may involve the pleura and set up an inflammatory reaction.

On examination a characteristic pleural rub is heard which usually disappears as fluid accumulates in the pleural cavity.
