Nutrition labels don't specify the amount of trans-fatty acids (TFAs) in the product, so you must do a bit of sleuthing to determine how much you're getting.
  • Diet or whipped margarine contains less TFAs than tub varieties, and tub is better than stick margarine.
  • Read labels and avoid foods that contain hydrogenated vegetable oils.
  • Up to 40 percent of the fats in these foods can be TFAs.
  • Make your own spread by whipping a stick of butter with a half cup of canola oil; store it in the refrigerator.
