The nomenclature for alloimmune platelet antibodies has recently changed. The previous terminology of PLA1 etc. is replaced by the human platelet antigen (HPA) classification. Gene frequencies of the various HPAs vary greatly among populations. Caucasians have a relatively low frequency of HPA-1a (the old PLA 1) positivity (about 98%) compared to virtually 100% for other ethnic groups.
