| Oxygenated Blood |
Blood from the fetus is carried by umbilical arteries to the placenta. In the placenta the vessels absorb oxygen and nutrition from the maternal blood and return carbon dioxide and waste products to the maternal circulation. The oxygenated blood returns to the fetus via the umbilical vein.
