Marine

Marine
In marine use, atomic power is already taking its place. Encouraged by the success of Navy submarines, surface ships usingt atomic power are already on the drawing boards. One, the Savannah, is already being built at the Camden plant of the New Yourk Shipbuilding Corporation. It is nearly 600 feet long, has a 22,000 ton displacement, and will carry 60 passengers and 9,900 tons of cargo.

Economy of space required for engines as evidence in the Savannah diagram infrequent refueling, smaller crew, all recommend atomic power. Moreover, passenger and freight submarines may yet come into use. The ability to submerge below the storm line in rough weather and to short cut beneath polar ice are not negligible considerations in commercial shipping.
